As you know we like to carry as many artists as possible who give back + we like to help where help is needed. We carry many masks with different materials, designs and sizes. Here is the story behind our facemasks:
1) Malia Designs
We have worked with Malia Designs for over ten years! We usually carry their bags and wallets but have now turned to carrying their affordable, tightly-woven cotton reversible masks. They are Fair Trade and made in Cambodia from upcycled and remnant fabric from making scarves. An integral part of Malia Designs’ work is partnering with organizations that share their mission to break the cycle of human trafficking in Cambodia. Pivoting to making fabric face masks has allowed their partners to continue to pay artisan salaries since regular production orders have dropped dramatically. Women-owned (Chicago and San Diego) and they work with women-led producing groups.
2) Lotus + Luna
We have worked with Lotus + Luna for 2 years. We usually carry their bracelets, kimonos, headbands and scrunchies. They use the soft rayon fabric remnants from their kimonos and pants to make their pleated + wide face masks. They also make soft, triple layer cotton masks for adults and children with a little slip for a filter. All of their masks are light and breathable. Lotus + Luna work with women in Thailand, helping them to escape the cycle of poverty.
3) Sue Hotten
Sue is my neighbor's Mom. She is a school bus driver during school months, teaches art classes, and works at Ravinia during the summer months. Her summer work has now been cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. She has been making 100% prewashed cotton pleated masks for us with a focus on Batik prints which we LOVE!! We are so happy to support her on so many levels.
4) Tah
Tah is an Oregon-based handbag line we were supposed to carry this Spring, but had to cancel that plan when we temporarily closed the store in March. Like many other designers, she has pivoted to making face masks. She uses 100% double layered cotton and they include a slip for a filter. She uses simple and rich colors. If designs are not your jam, this mask is for you. Another bonus is the included little bag that allows you to pop your mask right into the washing machine without getting destroyed.
We carefully select the brands we work with and think their stories are an important part of our business too. The next time you're in the shop, don't hesitate to ask the story behind your favorite things!
